From Our Blog – 10 Orthopedic Conditions That Require Elbow Surgery

Suffolk County Orthopedic Doctors

Why Elbow Surgery?

Elbow surgery is performed for various conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendon injuries. Each orthopedic issue impacts the elbow joint differently and requires unique treatment plans to address any deformity or dysfunction. Fortunately, our Elbow Surgeon in Suffolk County at Mirza Orthopedics is well-versed in all facets of elbow-related injuries. We’ve been treating the Long Island community for many years, and we’re happy to provide insight into how elbow injuries occur and how they can be treated.

What Leads To Elbow Surgery?

Unfortunately, several conditions can lead to the necessity of elbow surgery. Surgery, in large part, should always be considered a final resort, as rehab and physical therapy could be less invasive treatment options. But an evaluation from our elbow surgeon in Suffolk County will help determine if you require surgery.

Read on to learn about ten different orthopedic conditions that require elbow surgery:

  1. Fractures – Fractures of the elbow can occur due to trauma, sports injuries, and other accidents. Fractures may or may not require surgery, depending on their severity.

  1. Arthritis – Many forms of arthritis affect the elbow joint, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These conditions can cause pain and inflammation and make it difficult to use the joint correctly.

  1. Tennis Elbow – This condition is caused by overuse of the tendons that attach muscles in the forearm to the elbow bones. It can be treated with nonsurgical options, or surgery may be required if nonsurgical treatment fails.

  1. Golfer’s Elbow – Like tennis elbow, a golfer’s elbow is a form of overuse tendonitis that occurs when the tendons in the forearm become damaged and inflamed.

  1. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome – This condition occurs when pressure on tissues surrounding an important nerve causes weakness, numbness, and pain in the elbow region. It can be treated with nonsurgical or surgical options.

  1. Ulnar Nerve Entrapment – This condition occurs when something causes pressure on a nerve that runs through the elbow and down into the hand. It can occur in athletes, factory workers, and other individuals who perform repetitive motions with their arms.

  1. Elbow Deformities – When joints in the elbow do not develop properly, this can lead to the shortening of ligaments and muscles. This can require surgery to correct.

  1. Tendon Tears – Tendons allow the elbow joint to move freely and easily. These tissues can become stretched or damaged over time, requiring repair surgery.

  1. Elbow Bursitis – This condition can occur when fluid-filled sacs in the elbow become inflamed and irritated by repetitive movements or trauma. An elbow surgeon can treat this with draining procedures or shoulder surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

  1. Osteochondrosis Dissecans – This condition occurs when the cartilage in the elbow joint does not develop correctly. It can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the elbow.
